More About Ticks

Ticks are parasitic arachnids that love to feed off the blood of people and animals. Because of their indiscriminate feeding patterns, ticks tend to pick up diseases from animals and spread them to people. This makes them a particularly dangerous type of pest. Ticks have no wings, eight legs and an oval-shaped body. Their mouths are able to penetrate the skin of people and animals, and from there they insert a barbed tube so they can anchor and feed off of their host.

Ticks are known to carry a number of diseases, and some of them are actually deadly. They spread diseases like Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, tularemia, and ehrlichiosis through their saliva when they feed. Ticks are a dangerous pest to have around, and you’ll want to ensure they don’t get on your pets and/or you.

Why Do I Have Ticks?

Ticks generally find their way onto your property by traveling on rodents or other wild animals. They live in wooded areas, at the edges of ponds, and by lakes. They can also be found in your yard.

Once they fall off their host, they wait in thick vegetation, wooded areas, and tall grasses to find a new host. They then latch onto their new host and begin feeding. While ticks live outside, they often find their way into homes by catching a ride on house pets. They also may end up on your clothing if you spend time outdoors. The good news is ticks generally can’t reproduce indoors. The bad news is ticks that make their way inside can still bite you and transmit illnesses.

How To Prevent Ticks

There are a few simple things that you can do to help avoid ticks making their way into your home and biting you. Here are some tips for avoiding ticks:

  •   Keep your grass short.
  •   Clean and vacuum regularly.
  •   Check your pets for ticks when they spend time outside.
  •   Make sure your pets stay on a year-round tick control program.
  •   Remove bird feeders and other food sources for wild animals.

Getting rid of ticks can be difficult on your own. That’s why you’ll want to consider Nationwide Pest Control if you have a tick problem. We can send a  local pest control expert to your home or business to eliminate the ticks from your property and ensure they don’t return!
